At the hospital, doctors confirmed what Arthur had feared.
Lily had multiple fractured ribs, a concussion, and injuries consistent with strangulation.
One physician looked Arthur in the eye.
"Another attack like this could have been fatal."
Meanwhile, detectives from outside the county arrived.
Arthur handed them Lily's cracked phone.
"It's still recording."
Technicians carefully extracted the video.
The footage began with Richard shouting.
Then came the assault.
His mother's voice followed.
"Leave her there. Everyone's outside."
Richard laughed.
"She won't tell anyone."
Then came the sentence that changed the investigation.
"If she does," Richard said, "the chief already knows what to write in the report."
