The Arrogant Mother-in-Law Smirked When He Cornered Her. Five Minutes Later, She Was Begging for Mercy on the Street.

Chapter 1: The Blood on the Teal Silk

The triplex penthouse hovering above the Manhattan skyline was less of a home and more of a $50 million glass cage. Suspended sixty floors above the glittering arteries of the city, the apartment was a masterpiece of cold, unyielding perfection. White marble floors reflected the city lights, and the air was perpetually chilled, smelling faintly of ozone and Eleanor Scullion’s suffocating, heavy rose perfume.

Victoria Scullion stood near the center of the sprawling living room, her posture entirely flawless. She wore a custom white off-the-shoulder crepe gown that clung perfectly to her silhouette, the fabric undisturbed despite the suffocating tension in the room. For three years, she had played her part. She had been the quiet, accommodating wife to Richard Scullion. She had smiled for the society pages, funded his failing venture capital firm from her blind trusts, and endured the relentless, subtle cruelties of his mother, Eleanor.

Eleanor stood a few feet away, draped in a rigid teal satin dress that looked like armor. Her face was pinched with the kind of aristocratic disdain reserved only for those who believed they were born to rule, despite living entirely on Victoria's dime.

"You are embarrassing this family, Victoria," Eleanor hissed, her voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass. "Richard needs a wife who supports his public image, not some icy, detached woman who thinks her money buys her the right to dictate our lives. You will attend the gala tomorrow, and you will apologize to the board."

Victoria did not blink. Her dark eyes, usually carefully veiled to hide her intelligence, were completely dead. "I am not going to the gala, Eleanor. And I am done funding Richard's vanity projects."

Richard stepped forward. He was a handsome man, but it was a weak, brittle kind of handsome. His jaw clenched, his ego bruising instantly at the defiance. He had spent three years convinced that Victoria was a fragile, submissive heiress who had cut ties with her formidable family for love. He thought she was isolated. He thought she was trapped.

"Don't speak to her like that," Richard barked, stepping into Victoria's personal space, his chest puffed out in a pathetic display of dominance. The vein in his neck throbbed. "My mother—"

He raised his hand.

It was a fatal miscalculation. He intended to grab her arm, to shake her, to physically impose his will as he had done behind closed doors before. But he never made contact.

Before Richard’s hand could even graze her skin, Victoria moved. The transition from motionless statue to apex predator was instantaneous. Her arm shot upward with terrifying, practiced velocity. The heel of her palm connected with the bridge of Richard’s nose with a sickening, wet crack that echoed through the cavernous room.

The physics of the strike were devastating. Richard’s head snapped backward so violently his feet nearly left the marble floor.

A spray of bright, crimson blood erupted into the chilled air. It arced across the space between them, landing in a gruesome, abstract splatter directly across the front of Eleanor’s pristine teal dress and splattering across her shocked, pale face.

Eleanor gasped—a loud, hollow sound of absolute, uncomprehending horror. She froze, her eyes wide, staring at the warm blood dripping down her cheek.

Richard stumbled backward, choking on his own blood, his hands flying to his shattered face. He hit the edge of a glass coffee table and crumpled to his knees, letting out a muffled, pathetic groan.

Victoria did not step back. She did not look at the blood on her knuckles. Instead, she stepped smoothly forward, leaning down just enough to close her hand around Richard’s jaw, her manicured nails digging mercilessly into his skin, forcing him to look up at her.

"Never," Victoria whispered, her voice a lethal, vibrating blade that sliced through the silence. "Touch me. Again."
