"The subject is still on location," Arthur said into the satellite phone.

A brief pause followed.

Then the voice replied.

"Understood. Federal notification initiated. Evidence preservation team en route. Estimated arrival: twenty-three minutes."

Arthur ended the call and slipped the phone back into its case.

Richard laughed.

"Federal? You really expect me to believe that?"

He waved the custody papers in the air.

"By tonight, everyone will know Lily had an emotional breakdown. These witnesses will confirm it."

Arthur looked around at the Easter guests.

"You mean the witnesses who watched an injured woman lie on the floor without calling an ambulance?"

The laughter stopped.

Several guests quietly lowered their eyes.


One woman stepped away from the group, clearly uncomfortable.
