Chapter 1 — The Perfect Wedding
The ballroom of the Grand Astoria Hotel looked like something carved out of a dream.
White roses spilled across every table. Crystal chandeliers scattered soft gold light over marble floors. A string quartet played so gently it felt like breath rather than music.

At the center of it all stood Elena Whitmore, radiant in a silk ivory gown, her hands lightly clasped around the groom’s.
Adrian Cole smiled like a man who had finally won his entire life.
And yet, in the far corner of the kitchen corridor, someone was shaking.
Mia Carter, a junior waitress, stared at the wedding cake being wheeled out on a silver cart.
Three tiers. Perfect frosting. Delicate sugar flowers.
Too perfect.
Her fingers tightened around her tray.
“Relax,” another waiter whispered. “It’s just a cake.”
But Mia wasn’t looking at the cake anymore.
She was looking at Adrian.
Because she had seen him before.
Two nights ago.
Not at a rehearsal dinner.
Not at a planning meeting.
But in a restricted hallway behind the hotel kitchen—holding a small vial of clear liquid and speaking in a voice that didn’t match the man smiling at the altar.
A voice that said:
“Make sure she doesn’t wake up before morning.”
Mia told herself she was mistaken.
Until she saw him again tonight.
Slipping something into the frosting.
Her stomach dropped.
The music swelled. Guests applauded.

The cake was being pushed toward the bride.
And Mia ran.
