Part 4: The Clean Slate
The following morning, the storm finally broke.
The local news channels weren't talking about my supposed embezzlement. They were broadcasting live footage from the federal courthouse downtown.
Vanessa and Carol were being led up the stone steps in handcuffs, their faces covered by their jackets to shield themselves from the flashing cameras of the paparazzi.
The evidence I had provided to the District Attorney didn't just clear my name—it exposed a ten-year web of municipal corruption that threatened to pull down half of the city's construction board.
Daniel sat on the edge of my hospital bed, feeding me a small piece of melon, his military uniform neatly pressed and back on. The relief in his eyes was palpable.
"The judge signed the permanent protective order an hour ago," Daniel said softly, brushing a stray hair away from my forehead. "Neither Vanessa nor my mother will ever be allowed within five hundred yards of you, me, or the twins."
"And the company?" I asked.
"I've filed for Chapter 11 restructuring," Daniel replied, looking down at his hands. "I'm wiping their names off the board completely. From now on, Mendoza Construction is a subsidiary of Ruta Norte Logistics. It's yours, Maya. Every single brick of it."
I placed my hand over his, feeling the warm, steady heartbeat of a man who had finally chosen his real family over his toxic bloodline.
The fetal heart monitor beside us let out a soft, rhythmic chime, the twin pulses of our unborn children beating in perfect, beautiful sync.
The money was safe in the trust. The house was quiet. The monsters had finally been locked behind iron bars where they belonged.
"We need to choose names for them," I whispered, looking down at my stomach with a soft smile.

Daniel leaned down, kissing my cheek as the morning sun broke through the hospital window, casting a warm, golden light over the room.
"Something that means strength," he murmured. "Because they clearly take after their mother."
