Part 3: The Bloodline Ledger

Part 3: The Bloodline Ledger
By that evening, the hospital room had turned into a tactical command center.
Elena, our family attorney, walked in with a sleek silver laptop, her face grim. She adjusted her glasses and looked at Daniel, then at me.
"The cloud backup from the kitchen camera is fully downloaded, Maya," Elena said, turning the screen toward us. "The audio is completely clear. It shows Vanessa hitting the phone out of your hand, attempting to force your biometric print onto the app, and then your mother's voice at the end."
"Is it enough to deny bail?" Daniel asked, his hand tightening around mine.
"It's enough for felony grand larceny, extortion, and corporate fraud," Elena replied. "But Carol’s lawyers are already trying to play the 'family emergency' card. They are claiming that as the matriarch of the Mendoza family, Carol had an implicit right to borrow from the trust to save the family business from insolvency."
I let out a cold, sharp laugh. "A trust is a separate legal entity. A forensic accountant designed it, Elena. They can't claim ignorance."
"They aren't just claiming ignorance, Maya," Elena said, her voice dropping lower. "Carol just released a statement to the local media through her publicist. She's claiming that you are the one who embezzled the eighty thousand dollars from the construction company while Daniel was deployed last year, and that Vanessa was only trying to recover the stolen assets."
Daniel stood up so fast his chair flipped backward against the wall. "She's trying to ruin my wife's career?!"
"She's trying to poison the jury pool before the indictment is even handed down," Elena warned. "In New Mexico, if a corporate officer is under active investigation for embezzlement, their access to any connected trusts can be frozen by a magistrate judge within twenty-four hours."
"They want to freeze the children's medical money while I'm in high-risk pregnancy confinement," I said, a dangerous calm settling over me.
I looked at Elena. "Open my secure drive. Folder name: Project Carol, 2024."

Elena frowned, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "What is this, Maya?"
"Before I married Daniel, I spent six months auditing the Mendoza family business to make sure his personal assets were protected," I smiled coldly, looking at my husband. "I never told you, Daniel, because I didn't want to break your heart. But your mother hasn't just been gambling. She's been running a shell-company kickback scheme with the city concrete inspectors since the day your father died."
