Chapter 4: The Storm We Brave

Panic set in like a physical blow. Marcus had run away, hoping to remove the leverage Terrence held over Evelyn. He thought that if he disappeared, Terrence would leave and Evelyn’s board would back down.
Evelyn immediately called Dr. Hannah Klein and her loyal assistant. "We don't call the police yet," Evelyn instructed, her voice trembling but authoritative. "Terrence will use it to prove I'm an unfit guardian. We find him ourselves."
A massive winter storm was brewing over Chicago, the sky bruising into a violent purple. Sleet began to coat the sidewalks. Evelyn knew she couldn't run, but she refused to stay in the penthouse. She wrapped herself in a heavy coat, gripped her cane, and ordered her driver to take her to the one place Marcus knew best: the streets.
For hours, Evelyn walked through the bitter cold, visiting every shelter, every alley, and every soup kitchen Marcus had ever mentioned. Her legs, still healing, screamed in agony. Every step felt like walking on broken glass. Dr. Klein begged her to return to the car, but Evelyn refused.
"He didn't give up on me when my legs wouldn't move," Evelyn gritted through chattering teeth. "I am not giving up on him."
As evening fell and the sleet turned to a blinding snowstorm, Evelyn remembered the story Marcus told her on the first day they met—the story of his mother, who used to work in rehab. He had mentioned an abandoned community clinic on the South Side where he and his mother used to wait for the bus.
When Evelyn’s car pulled up to the boarded-up clinic, she saw the padlock on the side door was broken. She pushed her way inside, using her phone's flashlight to cut through the gloom.
"Marcus!" she called out, her voice echoing off the empty, graffiti-covered walls.
She found him huddled in the corner of a former waiting room, shivering uncontrollably, holding a faded photograph of his mother. When he saw Evelyn, he broke down.
"I can't let him take Lily," Marcus sobbed as Evelyn dropped her cane and fell to her knees to wrap her arms around him. "I have to go with him so he leaves you and Lily alone."

"Listen to me," Evelyn said fiercely, pressing her forehead against his. "Family isn't just blood. It's the people who stand in the storm with you. Terrence is a coward looking for an easy way out. But we are fighters. Do you hear me? We go back, and we fight."
Marcus clung to her, and for the first time, Evelyn realized she wasn't just a mentor to this boy. She was his mother.
