Chapter 2: The Price of the Spotlight

The viral video of Evelyn Carter walking, supported by the presence of young Marcus Reed, did more than just inspire millions—it painted a target on their backs.

For the first few weeks, the foundation flourished. Evelyn’s café became a local landmark, and the new community rehabilitation center, The Horizon Project, was fully funded within a month. Marcus, now enrolled in a prestigious private academy on a scholarship funded by Evelyn, was thriving. His younger sister, Lily, had a warm bed and a stable environment. But in the corporate world, vulnerability is often mistaken for weakness.

Evelyn’s distribution company, Carter Logistics, had been running smoothly under her executive board during her recovery. Now that she was back, walking with the aid of a silver-tipped cane, she expected to resume her role as CEO. Instead, she was met with cold smiles and closed doors.

During a pivotal board meeting, Richard Vance, the company’s CFO, slid a thick folder across the mahogany table. "Evelyn, your recovery is nothing short of miraculous," Richard began, his tone dripping with false sympathy. "But your focus is divided. The media circus, the charity work, taking in a street kid... The shareholders are nervous. We believe it’s time for you to step down as CEO and accept an honorary board position."

Evelyn’s grip on her cane tightened. She looked around the room; the people she had made wealthy were refusing to meet her eyes. "I built this company from a single delivery truck, Richard. My legs stopped working, not my brain."

"Be reasonable, Evelyn," Richard countered softly. "You're pouring millions into a vanity project. We are prepared to cite mental and physical exhaustion to ensure a smooth transition. Don't make this ugly."

Before Evelyn could unleash the fire building in her chest, her phone buzzed with an emergency alert. It was a message from the headmaster at Marcus’s school. Ms. Carter, please come immediately. There is a man here claiming to be Marcus’s biological father, and he has a court order.

The air left Evelyn's lungs. She stood up, her legs trembling slightly—not from weakness, but from rage. "This meeting is over," she told the board, her voice like ice. "If you want my company, you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. But right now, I have a family to protect."
