Chapter 4: Before Dinner

Chapter 4: Before Dinner

News spread quickly.

Not about the breakfast.

About the assault.

The photographs of my injuries, combined with statements from everyone present, became part of a police investigation.

Richard admitted he had witnessed the slap.

Morgan's version of events changed three times.

Eleanor insisted it had been "a family disagreement."

The responding officer called it what it was.

Domestic violence.

A temporary protective order was granted that same afternoon.

By evening, Preston stood outside the apartment he no longer had access to.

His company laptop had been surrendered.

His access cards no longer worked.

The luxury credit card declined when he tried to pay for dinner.

He stared at the receipt in disbelief.

Meanwhile, I sat across from my father in a quiet restaurant overlooking the Chicago River.

Neither of us mentioned the wedding.

Instead, he asked,

"Do you regret leaving?"

I thought for a moment.

"I regret staying long enough to believe kindness could fix someone who thought respect was optional."

He nodded.

"You built a good life before him."

"You'll build an even better one after him."

Months later, the divorce was finalized.

The court awarded me sole ownership of everything I had brought into the marriage.

Preston completed a court-ordered domestic violence intervention program as part of the legal consequences stemming from the assault.

Whether he truly changed was something only time could answer.

As for me, I returned to my work as a pharmacist, surrounded by colleagues and friends who reminded me what respect looked like.

Sometimes people ask whether flipping that breakfast table was the moment everything fell apart.

They're wrong.

Everything had already fallen apart the instant my husband decided that raising his hand was acceptable.

The table simply made the truth impossible to ignore.

And before the sun set on the first day of my marriage, I had already chosen something more valuable than being someone's wife.

May you like

I chose myself.

The End.
