Chapter 3: The Empire That Was Never His

Chapter 3: The Empire That Was Never His

At two o'clock that afternoon, Preston arrived at the headquarters of the pharmaceutical distribution company where he proudly served as Vice President.

Security stopped him at the entrance.

"There must be a mistake."

"I'm an executive."

The guard remained polite.

"You'll need to speak with Human Resources."

Confused, Preston entered the boardroom.

His father-in-law was already there.

So were the company's directors.

The chairman slid a folder across the table.

"Your employment has been terminated."

Preston laughed.

"You can't fire me."

"I helped build this company."

The chairman folded his hands.

"You helped manage it."

"You never owned it."

Preston looked toward my father.

"What is this?"

My father answered calmly.

"When we first met, Maya asked me to give you the opportunity to prove yourself."

"So I did."

"The position."

"The company car."

"The executive apartment."

"They were opportunities."

"Not entitlements."

He paused.

"This morning you struck my daughter."

May you like

"And that opportunity ended."

Preston's confidence disappeared.
