Chapter 5: The Fall of the Kingmaker

Panic is a loud, messy thing.

Julian stumbled backward, knocking over a tray of drinks. The crashing glass silenced the ballroom, an eerie parallel to the night Clara had dropped her tray at the Hawthorne Hotel.

"Ethan, listen to me!" Julian begged, his polished demeanor shattering as police officers moved through the crowd toward him. "She was ruining you! She made you soft! I built this empire while you were crying over an empty grave!"

"You put my wife in that grave!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. The sheer grief and rage in his tone made the billionaire look terrifying. "You took seven years from my family. You almost took my daughter’s mother!"

"It was business!" Julian screamed desperately as the officers grabbed his arms, twisting them behind his back. "It was just business!"

"No," Clara stepped forward, looking the man who tried to kill her dead in the eye. "It was my life. And you failed."

The guests watched in stunned, breathless silence as Julian Croft, the untouchable titan of industry, was marched out of the ballroom in handcuffs. The flashes of paparazzi cameras from outside lit up the windows like lightning.

When the doors finally closed, the silence in the room was heavy. Ethan stood frozen, his chest heaving as the adrenaline crashed.

Clara walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She rested her head against his chest, listening to the frantic, strong beating of his heart.

"It's over," she whispered. "He can't hurt us anymore."

Ethan buried his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of vanilla. "I promised to protect you. I failed you seven years ago."

"You didn't fail me," Clara pulled back, cupping his face. "You waited for me. And when I came back, you believed in me. We survived this together."

From the edge of the room, Vanessa watched them. She gave a small, respectful nod to Clara, a silent acknowledgment between two women who had chosen honor over jealousy. Then, she quietly slipped out of the ballroom, ready to start her own new chapter.
