Chapter 4: The Trap is Set

For two weeks, a silent game of chess was played in the upper echelons of Chicago’s elite.
Vanessa, using her lingering connections and unquestioned presence at the corporate offices, managed to breach Julian’s physical office during a board meeting. What she found was damning. A hidden ledger detailing a massive payout made exactly one week after Clara’s accident to a notoriously corrupt mechanic shop near the coast.
But a ledger wasn't enough to put Julian behind bars forever; they needed a confession. They needed him to panic.
Ethan announced an exclusive charity gala to celebrate Monroe Industries' record-breaking quarter. It was to be held in the grand ballroom of the Monroe Tower. Everyone would be there.
The night of the gala, the atmosphere was electric. Clara wore a stunning emerald gown, standing tall beside Ethan. She was no longer the frightened housekeeper with her head down. She was the queen reclaiming her throne.
Julian Croft approached them, a flute of champagne in his hand and a perfectly practiced smile on his face. "Ethan. Clara. You both look extraordinary. I must say, having you back has been the miracle this company needed."
"Has it, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice laced with an icy calm.
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Of course. Why wouldn't it be?"
"Because miracles are so unpredictable," Ethan interjected, his eyes locking onto Julian’s. "For example, Detective Vance from the coastal precinct reached out to us. He found something interesting at a mechanic shop in the northern port. A man named Silas is suddenly very willing to talk about a payout he received seven years ago."
The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. The champagne flute in his hand trembled. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
"I think you do," Vanessa said, stepping out from the crowd to flank Julian. "We know about the offshore accounts, Julian. We know about the brake lines."
"You're insane," Julian hissed, glancing around to see if anyone was listening. He leaned in, his mask slipping, revealing the venom underneath. "You have no proof. A ledger can be faked. A mechanic can be bought."
May you like
"True," Clara said smoothly. "Which is why we didn't go to the police with just a ledger."
She gestured toward the far end of the room. Standing beside the grand doors, flanked by two uniformed officers, was Silas the mechanic—in handcuffs, pointing directly at Julian.
