Chapter 5: The House of Healing

The fallout was biblical.
Within a month, Victoria Bennett was indicted on federal fraud charges, her reputation destroyed, her assets frozen. Eleanor Bennett, facing public humiliation and impending legal action, suffered a stress-induced stroke and was quietly moved to a private, heavily guarded care facility, her empire stripped from her grasp.
Arthur filed for divorce, ensuring Victoria walked away with exactly what she brought into the marriage: nothing.
But amidst the destruction of the old Bennett regime, a new one was blooming.
Arthur did not force Anya to become a corporate shark. He listened to her. He learned about the nights Katerina spent crying, the harsh realities of the healthcare system that had failed her, and the strength it took for Anya to survive.
Six months after the gala, Arthur and Anya stood side-by-side in front of a newly constructed, state-of-the-art medical building in Queens.
The press was gathered, but this time, there were no paparazzi looking for a scandal. They were there to document a ribbon-cutting.
Anya stepped up to the podium. She wore a beautiful, elegant emerald dress. The bruise on her cheek was long gone, replaced by a radiant, healthy glow.
"My mother died because she couldn't afford the experimental treatments that save the lives of the wealthy every single day," Anya spoke into the microphone, looking out over the crowd. "She was told that her life was not economically viable to save."
She paused, looking over at Arthur, who gave her a reassuring, loving nod.
"Today, my father and I are opening The Katerina Volkov Center for Advanced Oncology," Anya announced, her voice echoing down the streets of the borough that raised her. "This facility is fully funded by the Bennett Trust. No patient will ever be turned away for an inability to pay. No family will ever have to empty their mattress to buy one more day with someone they love."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Local residents, doctors, and nurses cheered.
After the ceremony, as the cameras flashed, Anya walked over to the marble cornerstone of the building. Engraved in the stone was the photo of the young Arthur and Katerina, forever immortalized in love, rather than shame.
Arthur stood beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"She would be so proud of you, Anya," Arthur whispered, tears shimmering in his grey eyes. "I am so incredibly proud of you."

Anya leaned her head against her father's shoulder. "We did it, Dad. We brought her into the light."
Hearing her call him "Dad" for the first time made Arthur’s chest tighten with a joy he hadn't felt in two decades. The void in his heart, carved out by his mother's lies, was finally filled.
