Chapter 4: The Boardroom Battlefield

Seventy-two hours later, the world had caught fire.
Despite the Bennett family’s best efforts, someone at the gala had leaked a video to the press. The footage of the "Slap," the photo, and Arthur walking the young maid out of the St. Regis was playing on every news network in the country.
Behind closed doors, the DNA results had returned. 99.99% Match.
Arthur had formally recognized Anya as his legal daughter and sole biological heir. But the elite echelon of Manhattan did not surrender their power quietly.
Victoria, realizing her marriage was over and her access to the Bennett billions was threatened, had aligned herself with Arthur’s mother, Eleanor. Together, they called an emergency meeting of the Bennett Media Board of Directors. Their goal was simple: use a morality clause and a claim of "mental instability" to strip Arthur of his role as CEO, citing his sudden obsession with an uneducated, lower-class girl.
The boardroom on the 60th floor of the Bennett Tower was a theatre of war.
Eleanor sat at the opposite end of the mahogany table, looking frail but vicious. Victoria sat beside her, a smug smile playing on her lips.
"Arthur’s judgment is compromised," Victoria told the board of older, conservative billionaires. "He intends to place a twenty-two-year-old maid with zero education into the executive trust. He is risking the legacy of this entire corporation over a bastard child."
Before Arthur could slam his fist on the table to defend her, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom opened.
Anya walked in.
She wasn't wearing a rubber-soled maid’s uniform, nor was she draped in the expensive designer clothes Arthur had tried to buy her. She wore a simple, well-fitted black suit from a thrift store, her hair tied back in a neat bun. She carried a thick, battered leather binder.
"I may not have an Ivy League degree," Anya said, her voice projecting with absolute confidence as she walked toward the table. "But I know how to read a ledger. My mother taught me how to stretch a dollar, and when you grow up poor, you learn to spot a thief from a mile away."
Victoria rolled her eyes. "Security, remove her."
"Sit down, Victoria," the Chairman of the Board snapped, intrigued by the girl’s audacity. "Let her speak."
Anya placed the leather binder on the table and opened it. "While I was waiting for the DNA results, Arthur gave me access to the family archives to look for any records of my mother. I didn't find my mother. But I did find the private subsidiary accounts managed by Victoria and Eleanor."
She slid a stack of highlighted documents down the polished wood.
"Over the last seven years, Victoria has funneled over forty million dollars of Bennett Media charity funds into offshore shell companies under her brother's name," Anya stated clearly. "And Eleanor has been paying hush money to four different union leaders to suppress wages at the printing presses—a direct violation of federal labor laws."
The room erupted. Board members grabbed the documents, their eyes widening as they saw the undeniable paper trails, bank routing numbers, and forged signatures.
"This is a lie!" Victoria shrieked, standing up so fast her chair tipped over. "These are fabricated!"
"They are bank-certified," Anya replied coldly. She looked directly at her grandmother, Eleanor, who was shrinking into her seat, the terrifying realization of her ruin washing over her.
"You threw my mother away because she was poor," Anya said to Eleanor, her voice vibrating with years of inherited pain. "You thought wealth made you superior. But your money is built on theft, lies, and betrayal. My mother died with nothing in her bank account, but she died an honest woman. You will die surrounded by gold, but completely, utterly bankrupt of a soul."
Arthur looked at his daughter, a profound, overwhelming sense of pride swelling in his chest. She was magnificent. She was Katerina's fire and his own intellect, forged in the crucible of real-world hardship.
The Chairman looked at Arthur. "Arthur, we will launch an immediate internal investigation. But based on this... Victoria and Eleanor will be removed from all corporate access immediately."

Arthur smiled, a cold, predatory smile. "Don't bother investigating. Call the FBI. Let them handle the embezzlement."
Victoria collapsed to her knees, screaming, but the sound was drowned out by the turning gears of justice.
