Chapter 2 — The Ambulance

Paramedics rushed inside seconds later.

"Twenty-eight weeks pregnant," Daniel told them.

"Heavy abdominal trauma."

They immediately loaded me onto a stretcher.

One medic pressed a monitor against my stomach.

Everyone waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then—

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

A heartbeat.

I burst into tears.

"So is the baby okay?" I whispered.

The medic smiled gently.

"The heartbeat is strong."

I cried harder than I ever had.

Daniel quietly looked away, giving me privacy.

Meanwhile two police officers approached Eleanor.

"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?"

She straightened her expensive silk blouse.

"I've already explained."

"We'll need your statement."

"My lawyers—"

"You can call them at the station."

Her face changed.

"What?"

"You are being detained pending investigation."

Gasps filled the foyer.
