Chapter 1 — The Sirens

The sound of approaching sirens echoed through the enormous Vance estate long before anyone moved.
No one dared.
The maids stood frozen.
The chauffeur remained beside the open front door, his face pale.
Even the gardeners had stopped working, staring toward the marble staircase where Eleanor Vance still gripped the railing.
She hadn't expected witnesses.
She certainly hadn't expected me to survive.
"Don't move her!" someone shouted.
I barely heard them.
Everything sounded distant.
Warm blood soaked through my dress while my hands instinctively protected my swollen stomach.
Please...
Please let my baby still be alive.
The man kneeling beside me tightened his jacket around my shoulders.
His voice stayed calm.
"Look at me."
I forced my eyes open.
"You stay with me. You hear me?"
I nodded weakly.
"You have a name?"
"Emma..."
"I'm Daniel."
He squeezed my hand.
"You are not dying today."
Above us, Eleanor finally found her voice.
"She slipped."
Silence answered.
No one believed her.
Not after what every servant had just watched.
Daniel slowly turned toward the staircase.
"I saw her."
His words landed like stones.
"I watched Mrs. Vance shove a pregnant woman down those stairs."
May you like
Eleanor's confident smile disappeared.
