Part 4 : The Lion's Den

The boardroom of Blackwood Holdings was located on the fiftieth floor of the city's tallest glass skyscraper. It was a room designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling windows. A massive obsidian table. Leather chairs that cost more than most people's cars.
At 8:55 AM, Marcus Blackwood was already sitting at the head of the table. He wasn't legally the CEO anymore, but he was still a board member, and he had the backing of the room. Julianne sat beside him, wearing a sharp designer suit, a smug smile plastered on her face. They had spent the entire night calling in favors, bribing board members, and setting a trap.
"She’s a child," Marcus told the twelve board members. "She has no business degree. She has no experience. My uncle Arthur was a great man, but his final will was the act of a delusional old man. We vote her out today. We initiate a hostile takeover, strip her of her shares, and stabilize this company."
The board members murmured in agreement. They were greedy men. They didn't care about Arthur’s legacy; they only cared about their dividends.
At exactly 9:00 AM, the heavy oak doors opened.
Maya walked in. No designer suit. No flashy jewelry. Just a simple, elegant black dress, her hair tied back, and a folder in her hands. She looked completely unbothered.
Marcus leaned back, crossing his arms. "You're late, Maya. Or should I say, former majority shareholder? Take a seat at the back. The adults are talking."
Maya didn't sit at the back. She walked directly toward the head of the table. She stood right next to Marcus.
"You're sitting in my chair," she said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade.
Julianne scoffed. "Oh, please. Don't embarrass yourself, Maya. The board has already drafted a resolution to remove you from executive control."
"Is that so?" Maya asked. She didn't move. She just stared down at Marcus. For a moment, Marcus tried to hold her gaze. But the sheer, cold intensity in Maya's eyes made his skin crawl. Slowly, humiliatingly, Marcus stood up and moved to a side chair.
Maya sat down. She placed her folder on the obsidian table.
"Before we discuss my removal," Maya began, her voice echoing perfectly in the quiet room, "let's discuss the eighty million dollars in debt this company has miraculously acquired over the last thirty-four months."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Marcus sneered. "Market fluctuations. Bad investments. The economy is tough. You wouldn't understand."
"I understand math," Maya countered. She opened her folder. She slid a stack of papers down the center of the table.
"I spent all night reviewing the ledgers," Maya said. "Market fluctuations don't pay for a twelve-million-dollar yacht registered to Julianne Pierce's shell company in the Cayman Islands. Bad investments don't cover twenty million dollars in 'consulting fees' paid to a phantom corporation owned by Marcus's best friend."
The board members froze. They looked at the documents. Bank statements. Wire transfers. Signatures.
Julianne’s face lost all its color. "Th-these are fake! You fabricated these!"
"Mr. Sterling," Maya called out. The lawyer stepped into the room from the hallway. He was accompanied by two men wearing dark suits and badges. Financial regulators from the SEC.
"This isn't a board meeting to discuss my removal," Maya said calmly, leaning back in her chair. "This is a courtesy intervention. I am not just the majority shareholder. As of this morning, I have frozen all corporate accounts tied to Marcus and Julianne. The eighty million dollars in debt?"
She looked directly at the board members, who were now sweating profusely.
"I know half of you took a cut of that money to look the other way," Maya continued. "You have twenty-four hours to resign and return every stolen penny to this company. If you do, I will let you walk away with your freedom. If you don't, these gentlemen from the SEC have a very long, very detailed report waiting for the authorities."
The room erupted into chaos. Board members stood up, shouting, pointing fingers at Marcus, trying to save themselves.
Marcus slammed his fists on the table. "You bitch! You think you can just walk in here and ruin me?!"
He lunged toward Maya. But before he could even reach her, the two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing his arms and pinning him to the table.

Maya didn't flinch. She didn't even blink. She looked down at Marcus, whose face was pressed against the cold obsidian.
"I didn't ruin you, Marcus," she whispered softly. "Your own greed did."
