Part 3 : The Weight of the Crown

The heavy iron gates of the Blackwood Estate closed with a deafening clang. The sound echoed across the marble courtyard. For Julianne Pierce and Marcus Blackwood, it was the sound of their empire crumbling. They stood on the outside of the wrought-iron bars, their expensive luggage carelessly piled on the sidewalk by the estate’s security team. Julianne’s hands were shaking. Her diamond bracelet caught the afternoon sun, a cruel reminder of the wealth she had just lost. Marcus gripped the bars of the gate, his knuckles turning white.
"This isn't over," Marcus hissed, his voice trembling with rage. "She can't just take everything. I ran that company for three years!"
Inside the gates, Maya Blackwood didn't look back. She stood in the grand foyer of the mansion, breathing in the scent of aged mahogany and fresh lilies. It smelled like her childhood. It smelled like her grandfather.
The staff had gathered in the main hall. Twenty people. Housekeepers, chefs, gardeners, and security personnel. For three years, they had lived in fear of Marcus’s temper and Julianne’s cruelty. Now, they stood in silence, unsure of what the new reign would bring.
Maya turned to face them. She didn't demand a bow. She didn't raise her voice. She simply offered a warm, genuine smile.
"Mrs. Higgins," Maya said softly, looking at the elderly head housekeeper who was holding back tears. "I believe my old room is still exactly as I left it. I'll be staying there."
Mrs. Higgins let out a breath she had been holding for three years. "Yes, Miss Maya. Right away."
"And Mrs. Higgins?" Maya added. The housekeeper paused. "From now on, nobody in this house will ever be spoken to the way Marcus and Julianne spoke to you. This is a home again. Not a dictatorship."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the room. Loyalty isn't bought with fear. It is earned with respect. Maya had just earned the absolute devotion of everyone in the room.
But the victory was short-lived.
The lawyer, Mr. Sterling, cleared his throat. He stood by the grand staircase, his leather briefcase resting on a mahogany table. "Miss Blackwood. Reclaiming the house was the easy part. It is the company we must worry about."
Maya followed Sterling into Arthur Blackwood’s old study. The room had been stripped of its former glory. Marcus had replaced Arthur’s antique oak desk with a gaudy glass table. Empty bottles of expensive scotch littered the shelves. Maya ignored the mess and sat down.
Sterling opened a thick file. His face was grim. "Marcus didn't just play pretend as the CEO, Maya. He has been bleeding Blackwood Holdings dry. Over the past three years, he has taken out massive, high-interest loans against the company's assets to fund his and Julianne's extravagant lifestyle."
Maya’s eyes darkened. "How much?"
"Eighty million dollars," Sterling replied. "And the debt is called in by the end of the month. If we cannot pay it, the creditors will seize the company. Furthermore, Marcus stacked the Board of Directors with his cronies. Tomorrow morning, you have to face them. And they are already planning to vote you out, claiming you are mentally unfit to lead."
Maya looked at the financial documents. Red ink everywhere. Marcus hadn't just stolen her home; he had poisoned her legacy. He wanted to make sure that if he couldn't have it, nobody could.
"He thinks I'm the same scared little girl he pushed out three years ago," Maya said quietly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the silver ring she had made as a child. She placed it on the glass desk. "He forgot who raised me."

Sterling adjusted his glasses. "What is your plan, Miss Blackwood?"
"Let them think they're winning," Maya replied, her eyes sharp. "Call a full board meeting for tomorrow at 9:00 AM. Tell them I will be attending. And Mr. Sterling? Dig into Julianne’s personal accounts. A woman who loves money that much wouldn't let Marcus sink the ship without securing her own lifeboat."
