Chapter 4: The Fall of the House of Julian

The boardroom of Sterling Global was a masterpiece of intimidation. Located on the 70th floor, its floor-to-ceiling windows offered a god’s-eye view of the city.
Julian sat across the massive oak table, flanked by two cheap, sweaty lawyers. He looked ten years older. His suit hung loosely on his frame, his hair was unkempt, and the arrogant fire in his eyes had been completely extinguished.
At the head of the table sat Elena, flanked by her father and Liam. She looked over the legal documents in front of her, pausing occasionally to sip sparkling water.
"This is a hostile takeover, Elena," Julian pleaded, his voice breaking. "You're taking the house. You're taking my mother's pension. You're leaving us with absolutely nothing."
"I am leaving you with exactly what you left me with on that floor three months ago," Elena replied without looking up from the contract. "Nothing. Except I am doing it legally, with signatures and contracts, rather than with fists and insults."
"I was a fool!" Julian cried out, slamming his hands on the table. Tears streamed down his face. "I let my mother poison my mind against you! I loved you, Elena! I love our baby! Please, give me a chance to be a father. I'll change. I swear to God I'll change."
Elena finally looked up. Her eyes were not angry. They were utterly devoid of affection, which was infinitely worse.

"You didn't love me, Julian. You loved the power you had over me. You loved having a punching bag your mother could abuse to make herself feel like aristocracy," Elena said, her voice low and dangerously sharp. "You don't get to claim fatherhood now that you realize the mother of your child is a billionaire."
She slid the contract across the table. "Sign the asset transfer, Julian. If you do, I won't press criminal charges for the domestic assault. I have the medical records, the photos of my bruises, and a team of litigators who would love nothing more than to see you in a federal penitentiary. Sign the company, the house, and your mother's accounts over, and you walk away free. Penniless, but free."
Julian looked at his lawyers. They both slowly nodded, confirming that he had absolutely no way out. Defeated, shaking uncontrollably, Julian picked up the gold pen and signed his name, officially erasing his family's wealth from existence.
As he stood up to leave, a broken shell of a man, Elena spoke one last time.
"Tell Victoria she has until 5:00 PM tomorrow to vacate the premises. I'm tearing the house down to build a community center for battered women."
Julian stumbled out of the room. The heavy doors closed, sealing his fate. Elena let out a long, slow breath, leaning back in her leather chair. The heavy weight she had carried for years finally lifted from her chest.
Liam placed a warm hand on her shoulder. "You did brilliantly, CEO."
Elena looked up at him, a genuine, warm smile breaking across her face. "Thank you, Liam. For everything." Suddenly, she gasped, her hand flying to her stomach. "Oh!"

Alexander shot up from his chair, his terrifying billionaire persona instantly vanishing. "Ellie? What is it? The baby?"
Elena laughed through a sudden grimace of pain. "I think the heir to the Sterling empire is ready to make an entrance."
