Chapter 3: The Crimson Gala

The annual St. Jude’s Charity Gala was the crown jewel of the city's social calendar. It was a dazzling display of excessive wealth, where millionaires came to rub shoulders with billionaires. This year, it was held in the grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel, bathed in crimson lighting and the scent of imported orchids.

For Julian and Victoria, this gala was their last, desperate gasp for air. They had scraped together the last of their liquid assets to buy a table, hoping to corner a mysterious venture capitalist rumored to be looking to absorb struggling logistics firms.
Victoria, wearing a heavily tailored but slightly outdated burgundy gown, clutched her champagne flute like a weapon. "Stand up straight, Julian. Smile. We just need one signature tonight and we can save the company. We can get our lives back."
Julian nodded, though his eyes were hollow. He looked around the room, feeling the phantom presence of the wife he had thrown away. The rumors had been swirling for months that Alexander Sterling’s reclusive daughter was finally going to make her public debut to take over the empire.
Suddenly, the ambient jazz music faded, replaced by the sharp tap of a microphone. The master of ceremonies stepped forward. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are honored tonight by the presence of our largest benefactor. Please welcome the future CEO of Sterling Global, Ms. Elena Sterling."
The heavy, gold-leafed double doors at the top of the grand staircase opened.
Julian’s breath stopped. The champagne flute slipped from Victoria’s trembling fingers, shattering against the marble floor—a sharp, piercing sound that went ignored by the crowd.
Standing at the top of the stairs was Elena. She was a vision of absolute, untouchable power. Dressed in a custom-made, emerald-green silk gown that elegantly accentuated her eight-month pregnancy, she looked like a modern-day empress. Gone was the timid, bruised girl in the cheap blue dress. Her hair was swept back into a sleek chignon, and a diamond necklace worth more than Julian’s entire company glittered at her throat.
Beside her, offering his arm with a look of immense pride, was Liam, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic tuxedo.
The crowd erupted into applause. Elena descended the stairs with measured, graceful steps. Her gaze swept over the room, commanding respect from the city’s elite. And then, her eyes locked onto Julian and Victoria.
She didn't flinch. She didn't look away. A small, glacial smile touched the corner of her lips.
Julian felt his knees weaken. The mysterious venture capitalist. The blacklisting. The sudden ruin. In a single, horrifying second of clarity, the puzzle pieces snapped together in his mind. It wasn't the market. It was her.
As Elena reached the floor, the crowd parted for her like the Red Sea. She walked directly toward Julian's table, the rhythmic click of her Louboutins sounding like a ticking clock counting down the final seconds of his life.
"Victoria. Julian," Elena said, her voice smooth, cultured, and terrifyingly calm. "I hope you're enjoying the champagne. I selected the vintage myself."
"Elena..." Julian gasped, stepping forward, his eyes filling with desperate tears. "My god, Elena, you look... you're..."
Liam smoothly stepped between them, subtly angling his shoulder to block Julian's advance. "Back up, Julian. You're violating the restraining order."

Victoria, her face drained of all color, looked like she might faint. "You... you did this. You destroyed us."
"Destroyed you?" Elena laughed, a soft, melodic sound that chilled Julian to the bone. "Victoria, I haven't even started. I just bought your debt. As of tomorrow morning, I am your sole creditor. Enjoy the gala. It's the last time you'll ever be allowed in a room like this."
