Chapter 4: The Price of the Crown

Three Days Later.
The headline dominated every social media feed, news outlet, and gossip blog in the country: "THE VANCE HEIR? OR THE GREATEST CON IN HIGH SOCIETY?"

Accompanied by a heavily doctored photograph of Elara standing next to a man she hadn't seen since college, the article alleged that her pregnancy was a calculated scam. It painted her as a master manipulator who had hypnotized the reclusive billionaire into a sham marriage. The comments sections were flooded with vitriol, weaponized by bot farms secretly funded by Cassandra’s family.
Inside the penthouse of the Vance Tower, Elara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the city. The sky was overcast, reflecting the heavy dread in her chest. Her phone had been vibrating non-stop until Julian had taken it and thrown it into the fireplace an hour ago.
The double doors to the study opened, and Julian walked in. He looked exhausted, having spent the last forty-eight hours in brutal, closed-door legal meetings. He walked up behind Elara, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder, his hands resting gently on her baby bump.
"Don't look at the news," he murmured, kissing the side of her head.
"How can I not, Julian?" Elara whispered, leaning back into his solid warmth. "Your company's stock dropped four percent this morning. Your investors are panicking. And it’s because of me. Cassandra won. She made me a liability."
Julian spun her around gently, his hands gripping her shoulders. His eyes were no longer tender; they were blazing with a cold, calculated fury. "Listen to me. You are not a liability. You are my family. The people who printed those lies are about to learn what happens when you threaten a Vance."
"But the board—"
"The board answers to me," Julian interrupted smoothly. "And as for Cassandra and her father... I gave them a chance to quietly apologize. They chose war instead. So, I am going to give them a war."
Down in the financial district, Cassandra strutted into her father’s banking headquarters, a triumphant smirk on her face. The viral article was working perfectly. The public was turning against Elara, and rumors were swirling that Julian would annul the marriage to save his empire.
She pushed open the doors to the executive boardroom, expecting to see her father celebrating. Instead, she found him slumped in his chair, his face ashen, staring blankly at a stack of legal documents.
"Dad? What's wrong?" Cassandra asked, her smirk faltering.
"It's over," her father whispered hoarsely.
"What do you mean? Vance's stocks are dropping—"
"Vance didn't care about his stocks, Cassandra!" her father suddenly roared, slamming his fist on the table. "While we were busy planting fake news articles, Julian Vance spent the last three days buying out our international creditors. He didn't just call in our loans. He initiated a hostile takeover. He owns the bank, Cassandra. He owns our homes. He owns everything."
Cassandra froze, the blood draining from her face. "He... he can't do that. That’s illegal!"

"It’s perfectly legal when you have limitless capital," her father sneered bitterly. "And that's not all. Vance's legal team just slapped us with a multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit. They traced the payments to the tabloid journalist back to your offshore accounts. You didn't ruin Elara, Cassandra. You ruined us."
Just then, the boardroom doors swung open. Two federal agents stepped into the room, holding warrants for corporate espionage and financial fraud. Cassandra backed away, her designer handbag slipping from her grasp, hitting the floor with a dull thud. The elite fortress she had hidden behind her entire life had just crumbled to dust.
