Chapter 4: Shadows and Sabotage

The humiliation at the gala was the final straw for the Monroe family. With Olivia’s criminal trial only two weeks away, Victoria’s desperation morphed into dangerous, reckless malice. If they couldn't discredit Sophie publicly, they would have to destroy her privately.
Sophie was spending most of her days renovating the café. Nathan had offered to hire a massive construction crew, but Sophie insisted on painting the walls and designing the menu herself. It was her sanctuary.
One evening, long after the sun had set, Sophie was alone in the café, balancing on a ladder to paint the upper trim of the windows. The front door was locked, the "Closed" sign flipped outward.
Suddenly, the heavy glass door rattled violently.
Sophie froze, the paintbrush dripping onto the drop cloth. She looked over her shoulder. Two men in dark leather jackets were standing outside in the rain, peering through the glass. One of them pulled a heavy iron crowbar from his coat and smashed it into the lock.
CRASH.
The glass shattered. Sophie’s heart dropped into her stomach. She scrambled down the ladder, dropping the paint, and bolted toward the back office.
"Hey! Grab her!" one of the men shouted, his heavy boots crunching over the broken glass.
Sophie slammed the office door shut and threw the deadbolt just as a massive weight slammed against the wood from the other side. The doorframe groaned. She backed away, her hands shaking so violently she could barely unlock her phone. She hit Nathan’s speed dial.
Pick up, pick up, pick up...
"Sophie?" Nathan's voice came through, warm and calm.
"Nathan! They're in the café! Two men, they broke the door—"
"Sophie, listen to me," Nathan’s voice instantly shifted from warm to pure, terrifying steel. "Lock yourself in the back storage room. Do not make a sound. I am five minutes away. The police are being dispatched now."
THUD. THUD.
The wood of the office door began to splinter. The men were kicking it in.
"Little bird," a gruff voice sneered from the other side. "Mrs. Monroe wants to send you a message. She says if you testify at Olivia's trial, this place burns to the ground with you inside."
Sophie backed into the secondary storage closet, plunging herself into total darkness. She clamped her hands over her mouth to muffle her own terrified breathing. She could hear the office door finally give way, crashing to the floor. Footsteps entered the room. They began tearing the office apart, smashing her laptop, throwing files, pouring gasoline over the new floorboards.
"Where did she go?" one of them growled.
The handle of the storage closet jiggled.
Sophie closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face, clutching the silver necklace around her throat like a lifeline.
Suddenly, the screech of tires echoed from the street outside, followed by the blinding flash of headlights cutting through the front windows.
"Sterling is here! Let's go!" one of the thugs yelled.
Sophie heard the sound of heavy footsteps running toward the back exit. A moment later, the café fell deathly quiet.
"Sophie!"
It was Nathan’s voice, raw and filled with a panic she had never heard before. "Sophie, where are you?!"
She pushed the closet door open, stumbling into the ruined office. Nathan was there, his tie discarded, his dress shirt damp from the rain. When he saw her, the terror in his eyes vanished, replaced by an overwhelming relief. He crossed the room in two massive strides and pulled her into his chest, burying his face in her hair.

"I'm here," he breathed, holding her so tightly she could feel his heart hammering against hers. "I've got you. They will never touch you again. I swear it on my life."
As the sirens wailed in the distance, Nathan looked at the gasoline soaked into the floorboards. The Monroes had tried to take the one thing he loved most. And Nathan Sterling was done playing nice.
