Chapter 3: The Lion’s Den

Two months later, the Sterling Annual Charity Gala was the most anticipated event of the season. It was Nathan’s first official public appearance since the "Poison Bride" scandal. The media was ravenous, camping outside the grand Sterling Estate like a pack of starving wolves.
Inside the master suite of the mansion, Sophie stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror, her breath caught in her throat. She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk gown that cascaded to the floor like liquid velvet. There were no diamonds dripping from her neck—only the simple silver necklace Nathan’s mother had left him.
Nathan walked into the room, adjusting his bowtie, and stopped dead.
"You look..." He swallowed hard, completely mesmerized. "You look absolutely incredible, Sophie."
She turned, a nervous blush painting her cheeks. "I feel like an imposter, Nathan. These people... they know who I am. They know I used to serve them champagne."
Nathan crossed the room, taking both of her hands in his. His gaze was fierce and uncompromising. "Tonight, they are in my house. And you are here with me. You are not an imposter. You are the only real person in that entire ballroom."
When Nathan and Sophie descended the grand staircase, the sprawling ballroom went dead silent. The string quartet seemed to falter for a fraction of a second. Hundreds of pairs of eyes, dripping with judgment and wealth, locked onto them. But Nathan didn’t flinch. He placed his hand firmly on the small of Sophie’s back, guiding her through the sea of billionaires and socialites like a king presenting his queen.
Whispers erupted the moment they passed.
"Is that the maid?" "I heard she planned the whole thing to get her hands on his fortune."
Sophie’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her chin high. They were approached by investors, politicians, and old friends of the Sterling family. Nathan navigated the conversations flawlessly, but he never let go of Sophie’s hand.
Then, the crowd parted. Victoria Monroe stepped forward, holding a flute of champagne. She wore a smile that didn't reach her cold, reptilian eyes.
"Nathan, darling," Victoria purred, ignoring Sophie entirely. "It’s so brave of you to show your face after the humiliation our families endured. And I see you've brought your... staff with you."
Nathan’s jaw tightened. "Victoria. I suggest you choose your next words very carefully. You are a guest in my home, though I’m still trying to figure out how you slipped past security."
Victoria let out a dry, condescending laugh. Finally, she turned her venomous gaze to Sophie. "I must say, dear, you clean up nicely. It’s amazing what a few million dollars of Nathan's money can do for a girl from the slums. Tell me, do you miss carrying the trays, or is carrying a billionaire's wallet much lighter?"
Gasps rippled through the surrounding crowd. People leaned in, hungry for the drama.
Sophie felt a familiar sting of humiliation prick her eyes, but then she remembered the cold, dark alleyways she had walked to survive. She remembered the courage it took to run across that wedding stage. She wasn't that scared girl anymore.
Sophie stepped forward, closing the distance between her and the imposing matriarch.
"I’ve carried a lot of heavy things in my life, Mrs. Monroe," Sophie said, her voice crystal clear and entirely unshaken. "I’ve carried the weight of poverty. I’ve carried the burden of honest, hard work. But the one thing I have never had to carry is the guilt of trying to drug and steal from an innocent man."
The silence in the room became absolute. Someone in the back actually dropped their glass.
Sophie didn’t back down. "My hands might have served champagne, but they are clean. Can your daughter say the same?"
Victoria’s face turned a violent shade of crimson. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. She was utterly paralyzed by the sheer audacity of the truth.

Nathan looked down at Sophie, a slow, incredibly proud smile spreading across his face. He turned to his head of security, who was standing nearby. "Marcus, please escort Mrs. Monroe out. She seems to have lost her appetite for the evening."
As Victoria was humiliated and escorted out of the gala by two massive guards, the crowd erupted into hushed, awe-struck murmurs. Sophie hadn’t just survived the lion’s den; she had tamed it. And Nathan knew, in that exact moment, that he was looking at the woman he was going to spend the rest of his life with.
