The Weight of Worn Leather / Chapter 3 / 4

PART IV: The Edge of the Blade

Silence.

It wasn’t just the absence of noise. It was a heavy, suffocating vacuum that sucked the oxygen right out of the garage.

Vanessa stared at the woman in the tailored black suit.

Her mind desperately tried to process the words hanging in the oily air.

Majority shareholder. Vanguard Automotive Empire. Nine figures.

The blood drained from Vanessa’s face so rapidly she actually swayed on her expensive stilettos. She looked at Daniel. She looked at the engine grease smeared across his jawline. She looked at his scarred, calloused hands.

Those were the hands of a mechanic. A blue-collar laborer.

They couldn’t be the hands of a billionaire.

“Daniel…” Vanessa whispered. Her voice was thin. Shaking. “Daniel, what is she talking about?”

Daniel didn’t answer her immediately.

He calmly picked up the red shop rag from the workbench. He wiped a final streak of oil from his thumb. Then, he turned to the corporate assistant.

“Thank you, Elena,” Daniel said. His voice was deep, resonant, and entirely stripped of the quiet humility he had worn for five years. “Has the escrow cleared?”

“Fully cleared, Mr. Daniel,” Elena replied smoothly. She tapped the screen of her silver tablet. “You have absolute controlling interest. The board is awaiting your arrival on Monday morning to finalize the restructuring.”

Eleanor, who had been standing frozen like a statue, suddenly sprang to life.

She scrambled to pick up her fallen designer handbag from the dirty concrete floor. Her face, previously twisted in disgust, aggressively contorted into a mask of desperate, frantic warmth.

“Daniel! Sweetheart!” Eleanor gasped, taking a step forward with a wide, trembling smile. “Why didn’t you tell us? My god, a secret of this magnitude… we had no idea!”

Daniel slowly turned his gaze to his mother-in-law.

His eyes were like glacial ice.

“You had no idea,” Daniel repeated softly.

“Of course not!” Eleanor laughed nervously, waving her hand as if trying to swat away the tension in the room. “We were just… we were just worried about your future, Daniel. We want what’s best for Vanessa. We thought you were stuck in a dead-end job. If we had known you were building an empire…”

“If you had known I was building an empire, you would have treated me like a human being,” Daniel finished the sentence for her.

Eleanor’s fake smile faltered.

Daniel took a slow step forward. The heavy thud of his steel-toed boot echoed in the cavernous space.

“You didn’t want what was best for me, Eleanor,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. “You wanted Richard Montgomery. You wanted country club memberships and junior partners. You looked at the dirt on my hands and decided I was worthless.”

Eleanor opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out. She shrank back, suddenly terrified of the man she had insulted for years.

Vanessa couldn’t breathe.

Her chest heaved. The reality of her catastrophic mistake was crashing down on her in violent waves.

She looked down at the concrete floor.

Lying there, right next to a puddle of coolant, was her silver wedding ring.

The ring she had thrown away exactly two minutes ago.

I married a failure. Her own words echoed in her ears, mocking her. She had willingly walked away from the very thing she had obsessed over her entire life: absolute, unimaginable wealth.

Panic seized her chest. Pure, unadulterated panic.

Vanessa lunged forward. She dropped to her knees on the filthy, oil-stained concrete. She didn’t care about the grease seeping into the pristine white silk of her designer gown. She reached frantically for the silver ring.

“Leave it.”

Daniel’s voice cracked through the air like a whip.

Vanessa froze. Her manicured fingers hovered just an inch above the silver band.

She slowly looked up at him. Tears of desperation were spilling over her eyelashes, ruining her flawless makeup.

“Daniel, please,” Vanessa begged. Her voice cracked into a pathetic, high-pitched sob. “I didn’t mean it. I was just so stressed. You shut me out! You never told me what you were doing. If you had just told me—”

“If I had told you, I would never have known the truth,” Daniel interrupted.

He looked down at her. Kneeling in the dirt. Ruining her expensive dress. Begging for a piece of metal she had just deemed worthless.

It was a pathetic sight.

“I spent ten years building this, Vanessa,” Daniel said quietly. “I bled for it. I sacrificed sleep, health, and peace of mind. I wanted to give you the world. But before I handed you the keys to my kingdom, I needed to know if you loved the king… or just the gold.”

Vanessa sobbed, shaking her head wildly. “I love you! You know I love you!”

“No, you don’t,” Daniel replied. There was no anger left in him. Only a cold, absolute finality. “You love the acquisition. You love the nine figures. You hated the man tightening the bolts.”

He took a step back, distancing himself from her completely.

“You came here to end this marriage,” Daniel stated, his tone businesslike. “Consider it ended.”

“No!” Vanessa screamed, trying to stand up, her hands covered in black garage dust. “You can’t do this! I am your wife! I am entitled to half of everything!”

Elena, the corporate assistant, finally stepped forward.

She didn’t look angry. She looked incredibly bored.

“Actually, Mrs. Sterling,” Elena said, tapping her iPad. “I would advise you to consult your legal counsel. Especially regarding the prenuptial morality clause, and the exact timestamp of your verbal and physical abandonment of the marriage today.”

Vanessa went perfectly still.

“But we will handle that in a boardroom,” Elena added crisply.

Daniel turned his back on his wife. He didn’t want to look at her anymore. The illusion was dead.

“Elena,” Daniel called out, walking back toward the disassembled transmission.

“Yes, Mr. Daniel?”

“Have security escort these two women off my property,” Daniel commanded, picking up his wrench. “And if they refuse to leave, call the police and have them arrested for trespassing.”

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp.

Vanessa stayed on her knees. She stared at the broad back of the man she had just thrown away.

She had wanted a man with power. She had wanted a man who could command a room.

She finally had him.

May you like

And he was using that power to destroy her.
