Chapter 2: The Viper's Nest

The penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower was a fortress of glass and steel overlooking the sprawling, neon-lit grid of the city. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, mirroring the storm raging inside Julian’s mind.
Maya sat on the edge of a massive leather sofa, a mug of hot tea warming her cold hands. The red mark on her cheek had deepened to a bruised purple, a stark reminder of the violence hidden beneath high society's glamorous veneer. Julian stood by the window, pouring himself three fingers of scotch. He hadn't spoken since they left the hotel.
"I'm sorry," Maya finally broke the silence, her voice barely above a whisper. "I ruined your gala."
Julian turned, his expression unreadable. He walked over and sat in the armchair opposite her. "You ruined my funeral, Maya. There's a difference. Who are you? Why were you filming?"
Maya took a deep breath, her grip tightening on the mug. "I'm not just a waitress. My name is Maya Lin. I used to be an investigative journalist for The Chronicle. Three months ago, I was anonymously fired and blacklisted after I started looking into the offshore shell companies connected to Sterling Vanguard. I took the catering job because it gave me access to the board members. I wanted to prove I wasn't crazy."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "You were investigating my company?"
"I was investigating Marcus," Maya corrected him, her gaze meeting his with surprising defiance. "I noticed he was transferring massive amounts of liquid assets out of the country. Tonight, I saw him acting nervously near your table. He dismissed the regular server. I knew something was wrong. I pulled out my phone just as he slipped the pill into your glass. I didn't think, I just ran and knocked it over. If he had realized I saw him..."
"He would have killed you too," Julian finished, taking a slow sip of the scotch. The alcohol burned, but it couldn't touch the ice in his veins.
His phone buzzed on the glass coffee table. It was Vance. Julian put it on speaker.
"Boss," Vance’s gruff voice filled the room. "The tox screen came back from the private lab. The juice was laced with Aconitine. Pure, unadulterated wolfsbane. It induces cardiac arrest within minutes. It mimics a severe heart attack. Untraceable in standard autopsies."
Julian closed his eyes. "Where are Marcus and Victoria?"
"That's the problem, sir. The police chief arrived, but Marcus and Victoria had high-powered lawyers waiting. They claimed the waitress framed them, that the video is an AI deepfake. They posted bail and walked twenty minutes ago. Boss... they have the board on their side. They're spinning a narrative that you're having a mental breakdown."
Julian disconnected the call. He looked at Maya. She was a ghost in the machine, the only variable Marcus and Victoria hadn't accounted for. They had planned the perfect murder: Julian dies of a tragic "heart attack," Victoria inherits his personal estate as his grieving fiancée, and Marcus steps in as CEO to comfort the board.
"They're going to come for me," Maya said, terror creeping back into her voice. "I'm the only witness. I have the original file."

Julian set his glass down with a definitive click. The shock was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating fury that had made him the most feared CEO on Wall Street.
"No," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "They are going to come for us. And we are going to bury them. Pack whatever you have in your pockets, Maya. We are going off the grid."
