Chapter 6 — Noah's Question
Ten years after the attack...
Noah was old enough to ask difficult questions.
One rainy Saturday afternoon, he found an old newspaper inside a storage box.
Across the front page was a photograph of the hospital.
Another showed Marcus standing outside the courthouse.
"Dad..."
Noah looked up.
"Were you really going to lose Mom and me?"
Marcus remained silent for several seconds.
Then he answered honestly.
"Yes."
"And it happened because I ignored the truth when someone I loved needed me most."
Noah studied his father carefully.
"Were you a bad person?"
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"But I made terrible choices."
"I confused trust with convenience."
"I believed excuses instead of evidence."
Noah quietly folded the newspaper.
"Is that why you always tell me to listen before I judge someone?"
Marcus smiled.
"Exactly."
Later that evening, Noah asked his mother the same question.
"Were you angry at Dad forever?"
Khloe smiled softly.
"No."
"I was hurt."
"But people can change when they choose humility instead of pride."
She looked toward Marcus, who was helping prepare dinner in the kitchen.
"He didn't earn forgiveness with words."
"He earned it by showing up every single day."
Noah smiled.
"I think that's harder."
