PART 3: LIQUIDATING THE GHOST

The party was over,
but
nobody left.
The high-society crowd stood glued to the grass,
watching the ultimate corporate execution.
Julian was on his feet now,
but
he looked smaller.
Shrunken.
The wet tuxedo was dripping onto the expensive Persian rugs
that lined the outdoor lounge.

“Evelyn,
please,”
he begged,
his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
“Think about our reputation.
The Wall Street Journal is running a cover story on us next week.
The power couple.
If this gets out,
my fund will collapse by tomorrow morning at the opening bell.”
“Your fund has already collapsed,
Julian,”
Evelyn stated.
She took a sip of her champagne,
her face a perfect mask of stoic triumph.
“Marcus,
show him.”
Marcus,
her head of security,
stepped forward.
He didn’t say a word.
He simply held up a smartphone in front of Julian’s face.
On the screen was a live feed of the Vance Global Asset Management website.
The landing page was gone.
In its place was a cold,
corporate notice:
ACQUIRED BY STERLING GLOBAL HOLDINGS.
ALL OPERATIONS CEASED.
Julian’s knees buckled again.
He stared at the screen,
his mouth open,
water dripping from his chin.
“You…
you took everything.
In ten minutes?”

“I took what belonged to me,”
Evelyn said.
“You were just an employee with a fancy title
and
a white bowtie.
You forgot who wrote the checks.
You forgot who built the infrastructure.
You thought a pretty face
and
some cheap lies could fool a Sterling.”
Two police officers in dark blue uniforms entered the terrace from the side gate.
They walked straight past the guests,
their boots loud
and
heavy.
“Julian Vance?”
the lead officer asked.
Julian looked up,
his face pale,
completely broken.
“Yes?”
“We have a warrant for your arrest.
Grand larceny
and
corporate fraud.
Your CFO just turned over the offshore accounts you used to funnel money to Miss Chloe Miller over the past six months.”
Chloe screamed,
grabbing her designer bag.
“I didn’t know anything!
He told me it was his money!
He said his wife was stupid
and
didn’t check the books!”
“You can tell that to the federal prosecutor,
Miss Miller,”
the officer said,
pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
Julian didn’t fight.
He didn’t even look up
as
the cold metal clicked around his wet wrists.
He was dragged across the deck,
leaving a trail of dirty pool water behind him.
The guests pulled their expensive silk dresses
and
tuxedos away,
making sure not a single drop of his failure touched them.
Evelyn watched them drag him away.
She didn’t smile.
She didn’t cry.
Her expression remained perfectly stoic,
the true embodiment of a legacy billionaire.
She turned to the remaining guests.
She raised her glass.
“The engagement is canceled,”
Evelyn announced,
her voice echoing with absolute authority.
“But
the bar remains open.
Enjoy the night,
everyone.
The trash has been collected.”
The crowd erupted into applause.
High society loved a winner,
and
Evelyn Sterling had just proved
she was the only ruler of this kingdom.
She walked back into her mansion,
her white dress flawless,
May you like
her empire completely secure.
