Chapter 4: The Trial

Chapter 4: The Trial
Months later, the courtroom overflowed with reporters.
The prosecution played the hospital recordings exactly as they happened.
Jurors watched Rebeca calmly describe taking Valeria's baby.
They watched Octavio forge signatures.
They heard Dr. Salgado instruct nurses to disable emergency assistance.
The defense tried to argue the recordings lacked context.
Then another camera angle appeared.
And another.
Every excuse collapsed.
When Sebastián took the witness stand, the courtroom fell silent.
"My wife told me the truth," he said.
"I chose not to hear it."
He admitted every mistake he had made.
He accepted responsibility for ignoring the warning signs.
Then he looked directly at his mother.
"I loved the woman who raised me."
His voice broke.
"But I cannot defend the woman sitting there today."
Rebeca remained expressionless.
For the first time in her life, her influence meant nothing.
After two weeks of testimony, the jury needed less than three hours.
Guilty on every major count.
Rebeca, Octavio, and Dr. Salgado were all sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
