Chapter 2: The Ripples of the Ruined Mask

The silence inside our white SUV was a stark contrast to the buzzing, whispering chaos we had left behind at the Dallas country club. For the first ten minutes of the drive, the only sounds were the soft, rhythmic breathing of Ava, Noah, Ruby, and Liam, who had all fallen asleep in their car seats, exhausted from the excitement of stealing the spotlight.
Ethan kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the Texas highway, while his other hand reached across the center console, searching for mine. When our fingers intertwined, he squeezed gently.
"You were magnificent," he said softly, his voice a warm anchor in the storm of emotions swirling inside my chest. "Not a single shout. Not a single insult. You just handed them the mirror, Olivia, and let them break it themselves."
I looked out the window, watching the landscape blurred by the afternoon sun. "I thought I would feel angry, Ethan. When I saw his face, when I heard his mother ask those questions, I thought the old bitterness would come rushing back. But looking at Jason today… he didn’t look like a monster anymore. He just looked small."
"Because he is small," Ethan replied, his tone steady and resolute. "Men like Jason only thrive when they can keep their victims locked in a dark room, convinced that the darkness is their own fault. The moment you step into the light—and bring four beautiful children with you—their power evaporates."
But while peace settled over our vehicle, a category-five hurricane was brewing back at the country club.
The moment the doors of our SUV had closed, the polite facade of Dallas high society crumbled entirely. Jason stood frozen on the manicured lawn, the puddle of spilled champagne soaking into the expensive grass at his feet. The whispers around him weren’t hushed anymore; they were a dull roar.
His mother, Eleanor Carter, a woman whose entire identity was built on social standing and ancestral pride, turned on her son with a look of unadulterated fury.
"Jason," Eleanor hissed, her voice cutting through the humid air. "What is the meaning of this? You told this entire family, you told our board of directors, you told the entire church that Olivia was barren! You said her medical issues were costing you thousands, that she refused to take care of her health!"
"Mother, please, not here," Jason stammered, his face transitioning from a ghostly pale to a deep, embarrassed crimson. He looked around wildly, realizing that his colleagues from the financial firm were watching, their expressions ranging from disgust to mocking amusement.
"Then where, Jason?" Ashley interjected, her voice cracking with high-pitched panic. Ashley, who had spent months planning this baby shower to solidify her place as the new, superior Mrs. Carter, was trembling. Her perfect, pregnant belly suddenly felt like a target rather than a trophy. "You told me she was a psycho! You said she couldn't give you a family, that she was obsessed! If she just had quadruplets with another man, then what... what did you lie to me about?"
"I didn't lie!" Jason yelled, losing his temper as his ego was pushed to the brink. "Medical anomalies happen! Who knows how she got pregnant? Probably stuffed herself with experimental drugs or IVF that she couldn't afford with me! It’s an act, Ashley! She came here to ruin our day!"
But the damage was already done. In the digital age, a scandal travels faster than the truth. Within three hours of our departure, the Dallas country club incident had reached social media. A prominent local influencer who had been a guest at the shower posted a cryptic but juicy video: “Just witnessed the ultimate karma. The ex-wife showed up to the baby shower with handsome new billionaire husband and QUADRUPLETS after the groom claimed she couldn't have kids. Men, check your fertility before you check your egos.”
The video went viral, gaining over two million views by nightfall. Though our names weren't explicitly mentioned in the initial post, everyone in Jason’s professional and social circles knew exactly who it was about.
By the time we reached our hotel suite, my phone was blowing up with notifications from old friends in Austin and Dallas—people who hadn’t spoken to me since the divorce papers were signed.
“Olivia, is it true? Oh my god, I’m so sorry we believed him.” “Olivia, you look stunning! Please tell me those are your babies!” “Jason is losing his mind, his firm is deleting comments on their page.”
I sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed, scrolling through the messages with a detached sense of irony. For years, I had prayed for a sign, for an apology, for some form of vindication. Now that it was here, I realized the vindication didn't come from their apologies. It came from the quiet, beautiful reality of my present life.
Ethan walked into the room carrying two glasses of wine, having just finished tucked the children into their travel cribs. He handed me a glass and sat down beside me, pulling my head onto his shoulder.
"The internet is having a field day," I murmured, showing him a screenshot.
Ethan chuckled, kissing the top of my head. "Let them. But remember, a wounded animal is at its most dangerous. Jason's reputation is his oxygen. You just took away his air supply. He won't just sit back and take this."
"What can he do?" I asked, looking up at him. "The truth is out there. He can't sue me for having children."
"No, but he can try to rewrite the narrative," Ethan warned, his tech-entrepreneur brain already calculating the moves ahead. "He’ll try to attack your character, or mine, to prove that he was still the victim. Just promise me one thing, Olivia."
"What's that?"
"Let me handle the heavy lifting. You’ve fought this battle alone for too long. You have an army now."
Ethan’s predictions proved accurate within forty-eight hours.
Instead of hiding in shame, Jason went on the offensive. Desperate to salvage his career at Vanguard Financial Partners, where several high-net-worth clients were already threatening to move their portfolios due to the negative publicity surrounding his character, Jason concocted a dangerous lie.
On Tuesday morning, an article appeared on a popular Texas business and lifestyle blog. The headline was calculated and malicious: "Behind the Viral Baby Shower: Local Executive Claims Extortion and Corporate Espionage by Silicon Valley Rival."
The article didn't name Ethan directly, but it referred to a "prominent San Francisco tech mogul" who had allegedly targeted Jason Carter’s financial firm. The piece claimed that I, Olivia, had been involved in an extramarital affair with Ethan during my marriage to Jason, and that my recent appearance at the baby shower was a coordinated PR stunt designed to sabotage a multi-million-dollar merger Vanguard Financial was currently negotiating.
I gasped as I read the article in our San Francisco home, having flown back the previous day. "He’s accusing us of an affair? And corporate espionage? This is insane! It’s completely fabricated!"
Ethan, who was making breakfast for the toddlers, didn't look shocked. He calmly wiped a smudge of oatmeal off Noah’s cheek before turning to me. His eyes, usually so warm and gentle, had turned to chips of blue ice.
"He’s desperate," Ethan said, his voice deadly calm. "Our company, Bennett Tech, just opened a bidding war for the state-wide data infrastructure project in Texas. Vanguard Financial is the primary advisor for our main competitor. Jason thinks he can kill two birds with one stone: save his marriage by claiming you cheated first, and save his job by making me look like an unethical corporate raider."
"Can he get away with this?" I asked, panic tight in my throat. The ghost of the helpless woman I used to be stirred inside me. "Ethan, your company’s reputation... I brought this drama into your life."
Ethan walked over, taking both of my hands in his. He looked deep into my eyes, forcing the panic to recede. "Olivia, look at me. You didn't bring drama into my life. You brought love, joy, and four beautiful children. Jason Carter just brought a knife to a laser fight. He has no idea who he is dealing with."
Ethan picked up his phone and dialed a number. "Marcus? It’s Ethan. Activate the legal team. We’re filing a multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Jason Carter and Vanguard Financial by noon today. And Marcus? Release the medical records from the Texas fertility clinic from three years ago. The ones we legally acquired during the asset discovery process that Jason conveniently hid from the court."
My heart skipped a beat. "Ethan? The fertility records?"
Ethan smiled, a sharp, dangerous smile that showed exactly why he was a billionaire before the age of thirty-five. "When we got married, my lawyers reviewed your divorce settlement to ensure everything was clean. We discovered that Jason had bribed a clinic administrator to falsify your hormone reports, hiding the fact that he was the one with a severe, near-irreversible low sperm count. He blamed you to protect his ego and to avoid a massive payout in the divorce."

I stared at him, completely breathless. "He knew? He knew the whole time it was him?"
"He knew," Ethan affirmed. "And now, the whole world is going to find out."
