Chapter 4: The Core Extraction

The double glass doors of the ballroom didn't slide open; they were thrown back by a security detail flanked by Marcus Vance—the apex predator of the city’s legal elite. He moved with a synchronized, militaristic precision, his tailored charcoal suit catching the light of the chandeliers as he marched directly toward our table.

Behind him walked two plainclothes detectives from the domestic crimes unit, their silver badges catching the light, cutting through the wedding crowd like a scalpel.

"Julia," Marcus said, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the dead-silent room. He didn't look at David. He didn't acknowledge Margaret. He reached out, his gloved hand gently checking the bruising on my cheek before turning to the detectives. "The weapon was the suspect’s open hand. The minor child is a primary witness, and the entire room is a recorded crime scene."

"Wait a minute!" David shrieked, backing away as the two detectives moved into his personal space, their hands resting flat against their utility belts. "I am David Salgado! My family funds the municipal police foundation! You can't just walk in here and—"

"Mr. Salgado, you are under arrest for domestic assault in the third degree and felony child endangerment," the lead detective stated coldly, grabbing David’s wrists and clicking a heavy pair of steel handcuffs around them before he could even look toward his mother.

"Mother! Do something!" David yelled, his arrogant demeanor completely collapsing into a pathetic, high-pitched panic as he was guided toward the exit through a gauntlet of flashing smartphone cameras.

Margaret rushed forward, her hands clawing at the detective's sleeve. "Release him! This is a private family matter! My husband's firm controls the commercial leases for your entire precinct!"

Marcus Vance stepped between Margaret and the officers, pulling a sleek tablet from his inside breast pocket. He tapped the screen twice, his face an unreadable mask of absolute, clinical destruction.

"Mrs. Salgado," Marcus said, his professional voice slicing through her theatrical rage. "As of four minutes ago, when my firm verified the physical assault on my client, the Vantage Trust has officially triggered the moral turpitude and criminal liability clauses in your husband’s commercial credit agreement."

Margaret froze, her hand flying to her throat, clutching her pearl necklace as if it could protect her from the financial fallout. "What? What are you talking about?"

"Your son’s real estate firm is entirely leveraged against the industrial properties owned by Julia’s late father’s estate," Marcus explained with a chilling, quiet pity. "By committing an act of domestic violence on a property managed by the trust, the line of credit is now immediately due in full. Furthermore, we have already filed an emergency injunction to strip your family’s administrative access to the joint marital accounts."

He looked down at the spilled food on the floor, then back at her ruined cream dress. "You wanted your son to choose, Margaret. He chose. And it just cost your family every brick of the empire you used to build his cage."
